NAEYC and DEC Ideals
We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value
and human potential of each child. (DEC, 2000).
This ideal is significant to my professional life because children each have their unique potential and we must respect and appreciate that as professionals. As a teacher, we have control of the classroom and what we teach, and this sometimes gets carried over to controlling the children. Our job is not to control children, but to influence them, and this can be demonstrated through our behavior and language. The children we teach will grow and prosper in the world as successful members of society.
I-1.7- To use assessment information to understand and support children’s development and learning, to support instruction, and to identify children who may need additional services (NAEYC, 2005).
This ideal is significant to me because I am constantly referring to my collected data and assessment information to support instruction and assist children who need extra resources. It's important to reflect on assessment information and use it to influence how you teach. It helps me to understand the students I'm working with so I know what they need to excel. Each child learns in their own way, and it's necessary to understand this so you can support them appropriately.
P-1.9—When we have reasonable cause to suspect child abuse or neglect, we shall report it to the appropriate community agency and follow up to ensure that appropriate action has been taken. When appropriate, parents or guardians will be informed that the referral will be or has been made (NAEYC, 2005).
This ideal is significant to me and should be for every professional. The discussion of how to handle situations of abuse and neglect is larger than the classroom and affects the child in every aspect of their life. As a professional, if you suspect a child being abused or neglected it is your duty to report this, because you are an advocate for every child. The children who are being affected may not have a voice or the confidence to stand against what they are experiencing, and therefore you must represent their voice.

Tara,
ReplyDeleteI like the ones you chose to write about. I especially like the one about reporting signs of abuse to the proper authorities. Keeping children safe should be our number one priority. It is the hardest thing I have ever had to do but was such a relief after it was done. Thank you for sharing!
Trish
Tara,
ReplyDeleteEach of the ideals that you chose are very important to an educator. I-1.7 is very important in every classroom. I also wrote about this ideal because as teachers, we were taught "data drives instruction". You spoke about how each child learns in a different way and how important it is for a teacher to understand that. Without using information from assessments, it would be challenging to provide effective and meaningful instruction.
Thank you for sharing !
Tara,
ReplyDeleteThe first ideal you post is also very significant to me. Like you said its so important to remember what our job is. Its not to control the children but influence them. Each child is different and its our job to respect and appreciate them.
Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteI believe that all ideals are important to an educator but the ones you chose are extremely important especially respecting and valuing children. Children need to be respected and value by everyone. Also reporting child abuse is one ideal that needs to be taken very seriously because it is about keeping our children save. Great post.
Tara,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being honest and sharing your feelings about ECED throughout this course. I have truly enjoyed getting to know you through this course at Walden. Each week you provided great ideas and I can truly see your passion for young learners. I wish you all the best as you work towards completing your Master's degree at Walden!
