Personal Research Journey

I chose the following topic to focus on over the upcoming weeks:
Children’s Neurological and Emotional Responses to Traumatic Experiences

I have always found this topic to be extremely interesting, and I hope to learn more. Just this week I found three articles for the assignment regarding children experiencing adverse trauma, and gained insight on how they perceive and handle diverse traumatic situations. For example, Gershoff (2016) researched the affects that punishment have on a child, and how it can cause chronic damage to the brain as a result of stress. If you know of any resources or articles that discuss trauma in children, please share them with me!

Completing the chart has been useful because it helps me to focus on certain topics of our readings and resources. It is encouraging me to dig deeper into vocabulary that I would most likely glance over or get a quick idea about. Also exploring the websites suggested in the book was insightful, and I most likely would not have done that on my own. I learned that the Office for Human Research Protections (n.d.) aims to protect the rights of people involved in research studies, and I did not know this existed.

So far I don't have many questions, but I'm sure I will come across some as I go along. Please feel free to share any resources with me that you think may benefit my topic of research! :)

  1. Hi Tara,
I also chose discipline as a topic but in a different direction. I chose to look at the affect of school suspension and expulsions have on minorities. I find this topic to be disheartening and infuriating so I wanted to learn more in a hope to find ways to change this trend. Looking at our topics, I can see how they are related.
I also found the chart to be helpful in learning more about certain aspects of research and being exposed to websites I may not have stumbled upon on my own.
If I happen to see anything that may be of use to you, I will be sure to pass them along!

  2. Hi Tara,
This sounds like a very interesting topic to research. Brain development has always been intriguing to me so I decided to research how to foster healthy brain development in early childhood. Our topics could relate as you said punishments for young children could be traumatic and could impact brain development.

I have also found the charts to be helpful because it forces you to look deeper at vocabulary, but also resources that are provided by the book like the website. I looked up PubMed which is another online database (like the Walden Library) that provides research articles. I have included the link; it could be helpful to you in your research!

    Thanks for sharing,

  3. Tara,
I am so excited that we will be reading each other's blogs again! I have always enjoyed reading your insight and to follow in your journey. I also picked the topic of trauma and its relationship to child development. I plan on focusing more specifically on ACEs and the relationship between a child's ACEs score and their development. I also wonder what the socio-economic status plays. I would love to discuss different resources we find!
