The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression Continued
“What is one hope that you have when you
think about working with children and families who come from diverse
backgrounds?”
I hope that children
and families feel supported and nurtured in the classroom regardless of their
diverse backgrounds.
“What is one goal you would like to set for the early childhood
field related to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice?”
I believe our
goal should be to stand up and advocate for children and families related to
issues of diversity, equity, and social justice (Derman-Sparks & Edwards,
2010). I have learned about the importance of this advocacy through my courses,
but I believe this type of knowledge should be taught to all educators. If we
all attempt to advocate and strive for equality, then our society would be more
positive and supportive.
Thank you to all
of my colleagues for supporting my thoughts and enhancing or challenging them
through discussions. Reading everyone’s blogs and discussions has taught me
about the different perspectives we share and also how our thinking is alike in
many ways. I hope this year goes well and that we try our best to create a
supportive and anti-bias environment for our children and families. We have
learned so much from each other over the past eight weeks, and I wish everyone
the best in their upcoming courses and professional endeavors!

Tara,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed engaging in discussions and reading your blogs throughout this course. I have truly learned a lot from you as well as other colleagues. I feel as an educator it is our responsibility to take a stand for children, families and parents that faces challenges in their daily lives concerning culture perspectives, discrimination, diversity and much more. Good luck on your future endeavors in life.
Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteIt has been wonderful to have you in every course so far. It has been a pleasure sharing our knowledge, thoughts, and experiences in the discussion boards and our blogs. Thank you for all of your feedback. Even with our different perspectives, we share a common goal in nurturing and educating young children. Keep up the great work!
Trish
Hi Tara,
ReplyDeleteThank you for thoughtful discussion posts and blogs. Advocacy is so important for children since they are unable to stand up on their own, and as educators, it is our job to help fight discrimination and promote cultural diversity. I hope we continue to learn from each other in future courses. Best of luck!
