Competent Communication

A competent communicator is one that "is effective and appropriate for a given situation, in which the communicators evaluate and reassess their own communication process" (O'Hair, Wiemann, Mullin, & Teven, 2015, p. 13).

I personally believe that Barack Obama is a competent communicator because he is articulate, respectful, and clear. The following video is an excerpt of one of his speeches, which I find to be compelling and motivating.

At the 3 minute mark of the video, the speakers analyze the techniques which make his communication so effective and powerful. Obama is effective because he knows how to respectfully address a crowd, use eye contact and appropriate body language, and is understanding of the issues that he is attempting to address. He knows how to speak to a large group of people effectively due to his outstanding speech communication skills and use of language. I aim to model my communication behaviors after Obama because he is motivating and powerful with his language and the messages he gets across, and I want to be able to exhibit this as well. Obama is an effective speaker and I believe I can model this approach in my speaking opportunities with groups of parents, colleagues, and children. I hope to empower families and children through my communication by supporting them and encouraging them to succeed.

The following video was posted by the Wall Street Journal, analyzing Barack Obama's use of effective communication in his campaigns and speeches.

The one speaker discusses how Obama is effective because he is clear and concrete with his statements and has a strong defense. In a political campaign these strategies are most effective because unsupported arguments and defensive tactics are unproductive. At 1 minute and 40 seconds, the speakers discuss how managers can use these same strategies in the workplace and how they are effective, which we can also apply to the early childhood field.

  2. Tara,

I thoroughly enjoyed your first week post and the media segments you included. I have always enjoyed listening to Obama speak, but did not fully understand why it was so impactful. The video clips did a great job at defining the characteristics that make Obama so successful and communicating competently. I personally miss his level of competency in speaking to the public. I believe more should aim to be like Obama when communicating with others. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, I have to say you chose someone that I admire so much. I loved listening to all of his speeches even when he would just talk to people that he met. 4. Tara,
President Obama is a fantastic communication role model! I thought about using him, or his wife, as my own example. What I always like about his communication, is his ability to make the listener feel like he is talking straight to them. He doesn't talk over our heads but seems to say exactly what needs to be said. I know that he didn't write his own speeches but doesn't that make him an even better communicator? He was able to take someone else's words and make them sound like his own, is a talent of communication in itself. Glad to be in another class with you and look forward to learning more from you! :-)
