What I Have Learned

When I think about working with children and families from diverse backgrounds, I hope I can continue to keep an open and anti-biased mind. I also hope to encourage them to do the same, so a classroom is a place of acceptance and security. I would also like to set a goal for the early childhood field and its related issues of diversity, equity, and social justice. While many educators may know the importance of diversity, equity, and social justice, many do not. I believe it is vital that educators take courses and learn about the importance of these factors in education in order to set a foundation for educators across the country or world. This would ensure country-wide/global acceptance of all types of people and promote anti-bias school settings.

Thank you to all of my colleagues who have gone on this journey alongside me. We have learned so much from each other, and I appreciate the feedback you have provided. I wish you all the best in your future endeavors, and if you are doing the same course-map as me, we only have one semester left until we are Master Graduates! J Happy Holidays!

  1. Tara,
I also stated the importance of teaching anti-bias education should be school-wide. I can only imagine the impact we could all make on social change and social justice if we were all engaged in anti-bias work. I love your desire to provide a safe and secure environment for all children, regardless of their backgrounds and cultures. I have enjoyed having you in all of the same courses and I am sure we are on the same course-map! We are almost there! Happy Holidays to you as well!

  2. Tara, thank you for sharing your hopes and goals. I agree enforcing anti-bias education throughout a school is important in order to help initiate change in society. I think it is important to share the knowledge we have learned about anti-bias education with our colleagues and tap into their interest for this field. I look forward to working with you in the future!

    Happy Holidays!

  3. Tara,

As everyone else mentioned everyone should take a course on diversity and learn all about it. I think everyone would learn something and grow as a professional throughout the course. We are all professionals and the things we share and learn from throughout the last eight weeks has a huge profound effect on me.

As always, thank you for your words of wisdom and your willingness to be open!

    -Happy Holidays,

  4. Tara,

In the early childhood field there are many educators who just know the basics about diversity, such as implementing it into the classroom in the learning areas, pictures around classroom, dolls, music, etc. But there is so much more for them to learn about, and this is why I agree with your goal 100%. I also share that same goal as well. Best of luck in your educational journey.
